Osteopathy for Babies

Osteopathy is a gentle treatment suitable for babies and children and it is safe to bring your baby to see a qualified Pediatric Osteopath as soon as they are born. I will listen to your story from pregnancy through to the moment you walk through my door. I believe it is important for you to have a safe space in which to tell your story, and that is something we as osteopaths give you the time to do. I will try to establish how things are going for you and your baby, there is no magic manual that tells you what to do, and that in itself can be very stressful. What is right for one family isn’t always right for another.  I know as a new mum you are given loads of advice from well meaning people about the right and wrong way to do things. In my clinic there is only one way and that is your way, it is not my role to judge, it is my role to listen. I will offer advice where I feel it is appropriate, but it is up to you whether you choose to take that advice or not. I will however refer you to another health care professional if I feel your baby is at risk or needs other specialist advice. I am very happy to work in conjunction work with local health visitors and midwives. I am also able to give you some advice on your posture during feeding to help prevent back pain.

I will need to undress your baby in order to do a full structural examination. All examination and treatment is done using very gentle techniques. A baby’s bones are much softer than adults, so treatment is altered accordingly, so much so, that many babies I see, sleep right through the session. There is always time to feed, change nappies and have cuddles whenever needed. You cannot hurry a new baby!!!!

I will explain what I am seeing and the significance I think that might be making to your baby, and we will jointly come to a conclusion as to whether we feel treatment is appropriate. Treatment doesn’t finish as soon as you leave the clinic. My phone is always on and I will call you back as soon as I can to answer any questions or queries you may have. I would much rather you called me than went on Google, which can be a dangerous and frightening place as a new mum. I do understand that texting someone at 2AM is sometime necessary to alleviate your stress so that is fine, I just won’t answer until I get up!!!

There is little research on the effectiveness of Cranial Osteopathy for Babies, that is of a suitable standard to be accepted by the Advertising Standards Agency and we are therefore not allowed to claim that we can treat any conditions directly, but gentle manipulation could help soothe and relax your baby.

Osteopathy during and after pregnancy

Osteopathy is a suitable treatment to receive during pregnancy right up until birth.  Your body goes through many changes throughout pregnancy and after birth. Those changes include softening of ligaments, weight increases and decreases, and changes to posture that can cause general aches and pains. These include joint pain and back pain that can respond to Osteopathic treatment. Techniques used are adapted to the stage of your pregnancy and your ability to lie or sit in various positions. There are lots of cushions and different seats to enable us to find the most comfortable position for you to be in to receive treatment. Treatment is of a gentle nature and can include gentle massage, mobilisations and cranial osteopathy. If your baby is in a position such as Breech or transverse lie, I will never attempt to turn your baby. Post birth you can often be sore and uncomfortable. Yet again your body has undergone a huge transformation. All of this can be exacerbated by being stressed and exhausted. Osteopathy can really help alleviate those aches and pains and can also help with anxiety and stress.

Kate treats both myself and my 10 year old son. She is extremely intuitive and warm, able to get underneath what’s going on in our bodies on so many levels. I feel that Kate’s treatments have been crucial for us both, especially through some more challenging times – nudging us both back to health and balance.

Fiona, Hove

I have been seeing Kate for years. From the moment you arrive to a beautiful studio, you feel calm and safe. The treatments are amazing and Kate just seems to know exactly what to do.

Emma, Hove

I saw Kate within the first week after birth and she soon was known in our family affectionately as “ you baby whisperer”. My son was noticeably more settled and I would recommend her 100% to any new parents.

Katie, East Sussex

After suffering terrible pain in my lower back following a fall and struggling to contain the pain with all the drugs prescribed to me, after a few sessions with Kate I was amazed how effective Osteopathy was. It allowed me to move more freely without the dependence of morphine. For anyone suffering with similar symptoms I highly recommend this treatment.

Kate is really kind and really funny!

J - Aged 10

I have seen many osteopaths in my life but was really lucky to meet Kate when I moved to Brighton. She is my go to therapist for myself and my family. She has a very sensitive approach and is fantastic with our two small children. Highly recommended….
